Jujutsu is the unarmed close-quarters fighting art of the Samurai. Jujutsu techniques are often geared towards an opponent enemy wearing armor, and thus any striking is generally used only to create an opportunity. Jujutsu techniques are broken down into several categories:
  • Kansetsu Waza - Joint manipulation and destruction
  • Shime Waza - Chokes and strangulations
  • Nage Waza - Throws and take downs
  • Osae Waza - Pinning techniques
  • Ne Waza - Ground Fighting techniques
The majority of Jujutsu techniques taught in American Yoshinkan stem from Daito Ryu, however for ease of classification we use the simplified Aikido terminology introduced by Ueshiba Morihei that reduced the 118 kata of Hiden Mokuroku to about 15 core waza.
